Paeroa to Waihi – 24kms (6-8 hours return)

Our most popular section of the Trail follows the Ohinemuri River through the Karangahake Gorge.  You can choose to bike the whole section from Paeroa to Waihi return, or consider a shuttle. Chop 9kms off your ride by taking the fun vintage train between Waikino and Waihi.

The Goldfields Historic Railway operates daily, and riders can take their bike on the train for the 30 minute journey. Stop for lunch at the Waikino Station Cafe, or pack a picnic and stop at the Victoria Battery and Owharoa Falls which are a must do. Indulge with delicious wine and pizza at the Falls Retreat, or a craft wine at the Karangahake Winery Estate.

Visit the Victoria Battery Train and Museum to discover the remains of yesteryear, before cycling towards Waihi along the picturesque river.  The trail is predominantly flat, passing through farmland before finishing in historic Waihi township.

Riders who opt to return by shuttle to Paeroa can take the Waihi Gold Mine Tour to experience modern day gold mining.  Kids love the interactive activities at the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre.

If time permits, the Martha Mine Pit Rim Walk is an easy but incredible walk starting at the Cornish Pumphouse.  The wide path leads to the North wall where the view is breathtaking.  Interpretative signs offer interesting facts as you complete the 4km loop.

For a leisurely day, our favourite option is to shuttle riders to Waihi where they board the vintage train for Waikino. Here the ride back through Karangahake into Paeroa is only 15km, leaving plenty of time for a lazy lunch, and a swim at Owharoa Falls.
